Le banc de Marie-Louise

October 5, 2022

Le banc de Marie-Louise is an interactive sound art installation located in the heart of the village of Mascouche, designed to highlight collective memory and pay tribute to Marie-Louise Desjardins.

The work takes the form of a bench where Marie-Louise sits with her 77 cats. As we take a seat on her lap, she talks to us about the weather, the seasons, and tells us stories and anecdotes about the area. She, who was the subject of much gossip, now takes her place and makes herself heard in turn…

Based on memories and anecdotes collected from citizens by the Société d’histoire de Mascouche, the interactive system that inspires Marie-Louise’s words takes into account real-time data on the weather to weave a different narrative each time it is listened to. The story may be enhanced in the future with local news.

This project is made possible thanks to financial support from the cultural development agreement between the City of Mascouche and the ministère de la Culture et des Communications du Québec.
